OU Libraries’ History of Science digital collection began with several hundred 15th- through 18th-century rare books, maps, and other items digitized for the 2015-2016 Galileo’s World exhibition. They range from art, music, astronomy, and meteorology through natural history, the human body, microscopy, physics, and engineering, and on to religion and travels to China and the Americas. All images in the digital collection have been released to the public domain. Qi qi tu shuo
"One interesting book in the History of Science Collections, Johann Schreck’s Ensei kiki zusetsu rokusai (Diagrams and Explanations of Wonderful Machines of the Far West, 1830), is an engineering textbook written in Chinese by a friend of Galileo’s who accompanied him during his early telescopic discoveries. That book was originally printed in China as Qi qi tu shuo in 1627. This edition, printed in Japan, contains more than 170 woodcut illustrations. Johann Schreck composed Wonderful Machines of the Far West in a joint effort with Wang Cheng, a Chinese collaborator. Many of the machines depicted in the work are found in the pages of European books such as Agostino Ramelli, Le diverse et artificiose machine (Paris, 1588)." [Solar eclipse, August 19, 1887]
Title supplied by cataloger., The text at head reads: "Solar Eclipse, August 19, 1887. It will almost certainly occur. The solar eclipse will start appearing in the right corner (of the sky) at 2:36 pm, [will move up] to the top right of the sky at 3:48 pm, and will stay between the top and the left sky at 4:58 pm. The solar eclipse will be visible from Shirakawa to Sado. This solar eclipse will be a truly rare phenomen which last occured 101 years ago on New Year's Day of 1786. During the solar eclipse, the colors of various objects will look strange, flowers will wilt, and so on. It will happen once in our lives.", Text in Japanese.
