Alexander Posey
Alexander Posey was known as the "Creek Indian Poet." Throughout the episode, the speakers share poems written by Posey, giving us examples of his work. Posey worked as a librarian, and later an editor, before becoming the superintendent of several different school systems. The government later asked him for assistance with the Dawes Commission to help find missing tribesmen to allot their land. George Catlin, Side B
George Catlin first encountered Native Americans in his youth, which shaped the rest of his life. When he was a youth, a Native American man came near their home in search of a buried treasure his family had left during the Civil War. Catlin helped with the search, though many others in his town were prejudiced against Native Americans. The Catlin family later found that the man had been killed and Catlin devoted his life to righting those wrongs. He became a lawyer and later a painter who made it his mission to paint portraits of what he believed to be a dying race of people. Along with his brother, he opened a traveling museum, showing and selling artworks and other items. William H. Murray
William H. Murray was a lawyer, farmer, and political leader who came to be known as Alfalfa Bill, the "Sage of Tishomingo." After a long political career, he retired to become a farmer. Murray was the first to grow alfalfa in Oklahoma, earning his nickname. He was a prominent leader in the Sequoyah Convention and was elected the president of the second constitutional convention for statehood in Oklahoma. The Saga of Skulleyville
In 1832, the Choctaw were removed to Indian Territory and they established their Indian agency in Skullyville. Major F.W. Armstrong was the first Indian Agent there. The artist George Catlin obtained permission from Major Armstrong to travel among the Indians to paint portraits of them and to depict their lives. Bill Tilghman
Bill Tilghman was a frontier marshal who served for fifty years and was known as one of the greatest peace officers of the West. The narrator tells the story of Tilghman's involvement in ridding Oklahoma of many outlaw gangs including the infamous Bill Doolin Gang. Allen Wright
Allen Wright was a Choctaw who settled in Oklahoma at a young age. He went to mission schools and later became a preacher. He served the Choctaw Nation as a member of the Choctaw Council, working on the Choctaw constitution, and as the governor of the nation. Wilkinson's Voyage
After the purchase of the Louisiana Territory, President Jefferson began planning for its exploration. During Zebulon Pike's mission of 1806, he reached the Arkansas River. At this point, he detached James B. Wilkinson and other men to explore the Arkansas all the way to its mouth. This episode tells the story of his journey inlcuding the dangers and difficulties they faced. Toward the end of his journey, Wilkinson and his group met some Osage Indians on the Verdigris River in what is now Oklahoma. Lawton
Twelfth and final installment in a series about how twelve of Oklahoma's cities began. Often called the "Post" city due to its proximity to Fort Sill, Lawton was settled in 1901 after the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache lands were opened for non-Native settlement. The town was planned by Daniel T. Payne and business and residential lots were auctioned off immediately after the opening. Its early history is described, including the first schools and businesses, as well as discussion of how crime was prevalent because there were many gambling houses and saloons. Satanta
Satanta was a chief of the Kiowa and was known as the "Orator of the Plains." He lived during a time of great conflict between Native Americans and white settlers. Satanta frequently participated in peace meetings and the drafting of treaties and believed that white men were the ones liable to break treaties. However, he often broke agreements and was arrested many times. The last time he was arrested, he swore to keep the peace if he was released. He was not, and was given a hefty sentence.
